The Book of Mormon–The Foundation of My Faith

“The Prophet Joseph Smith taught that the Book of Mormon is ‘the keystone of our religion’ (introduction to the Book of Mormon). On another occasion he stated: ‘Take away the Book of Mormon and the revelations, and where is our religion? We have none’ (History of the Church,2:52).

The Book of Mormon is the keystone to our religion and the foundation of our faith–the convincing evidence to the world that God has, in fact, called a modern-day prophet, restored the authority of God, and Jesus Christ’s New Testament church. President Ezra Taft Benson said that the Book of Mormon is the keystone in at least three ways:

Witness of Christ. “The Book of Mormon is the keystone in our witness of Jesus Christ, who is Himself the cornerstone of everything we do. It bears witness of His reality with power and clarity.’

Fulness of doctrine. “The Lord Himself has stated that the Book of Mormon contains the ‘fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ.’ (D&C 20:9 [;27:5].) . . . In the Book of Mormon we will find the fulness of those doctrines required for our salvation. And they are taught plainly and simply so that even children can learn the ways of salvation and exaltation.”

Foundation of testimony. “Just as the arch crumbles if the keystone is removed, so does all the Church stand or fall with the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon. The enemies of the Church understand this clearly. This is why they go to such great lengths to try to disprove the Book of Mormon, for if it can be discredited, the Prophet Joseph Smith goes with it. So does our claim to priesthood keys, and revelation, and the restored Church. But in like manner, if the Book of Mormon be true—and millions have now testified that they have the witness of the Spirit that it is indeed true—then one must accept the claims of the Restoration and all that accompanies it” (A Witness and a Warning [1988], 18–19).

The Book of Mormon becomes the foundation of our testimony as Latter-day Saints. Either it is true, a record from God, or it was fabricated out of whole cloth and the largest lie in religious history.

The Book of Mormon is the convincing evidence, to the World, that Joseph Smith is a true Prophet of God. President Hugh B. Brown said:

“I believe that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God because he talked like a prophet. He was the first man since the apostles of Jesus Christ were slain to make the claim that prophets have always made–, that God had spoken to him. He lived and died like a prophet. I believe he was a prophet of God because he gave to this world some of the greatest of all revelations. I believe that he was a prophet of God because he predicted many things that have come to pass—things that only God could bring to pass.

I submit to you, and I submitted to my friend, that as much as any man who ever lived, he had a testimony of Jesus, for, like the apostles of old, he saw Him and heard Him speak. He gave his life for that testimony. I challenge any man to name one who has given more evidence of the divine calling of Jesus Christ than did the Prophet Joseph Smith.

I believe the Prophet Joseph Smith was a prophet because he did many superhuman things. One was translating the Book of Mormon. Some people will not agree, but I submit to you that the Prophet Joseph Smith in translating the Book of Mormon did a superhuman work. I ask you…to undertake to write a story on the ancient inhabitants of America, to write as he did without any source of material. Include in your story 54 chapters dealing with wars, 21 historical chapters, and 55 chapters on visions and prophecies. And, remember, when you begin to write on visions and prophecies, you must have your record agree meticulously with the Bible. You must write 71 chapters on doctrine and exhortation, and here, too, you must check every statement with the scriptures or you will be proven to be a fraud. You must write 21 chapters on the ministry of Christ, and everything you claim He said and did and every testimony you write in your book about Him must agree absolutely with the New Testament.

I ask you, would you like to undertake such a task? I would suggest to you too that you must employ figures of speech, similes, metaphors, narrations, exposition, description, oratory, epic, lyric, logic, and parables. Undertake that, will you?

I ask you to remember that the man who translated the Book of Mormon was a young man who hadn’t had the opportunity of schooling that you have had, and yet he dictated that book in just a little over two months and made very few, if any, corrections. For over one hundred years some of the best students and scholars of the world have been trying to prove from the Bible that the Book of Mormon is false, but not one of them has been able to prove that anything he wrote was not in strict harmony with the scriptures—with the Bible and with the word of God.

The Book of Mormon not only declares on the title page that its purpose is to convince Jew and Gentile that Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God, but this truth is the burden of its message. In 3 Nephi it is recorded that multitudes of people testified, ‘We saw Him. We felt of His hands and His side. We know He is the Christ’ (see 3 Nephi 11:14–15).”

However, the greatest of evidence of the divinity of the Book of Mormon and the divine calling of Joseph Smith is the promise written in the 10th Chapter of Moroni.

“When ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost. And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.” (Moro. 10:4–5; italics added.)

I know the Book of Mormon is true. Not from the facts I see, or the things I hold, but because God has witnessed to me through the power of the Holy Ghost that it is true. No one and no thing could take that away from that. Because I know the Book of Mormon is true,  I know the true Church of Jesus Christ has been restored. God has chosen a Prophet, once again, to take us out of darkness. I know the Priesthood authority, the power to act in the name of God, is on the Earth once again, and it is the greatest message to the World since the angel’s announced the birth of Christ. The most amazing thing is each of us can have this divine knowledge for ourselves…as we prove to God we will do all that he asks.

  1. Great start to what will be an amazing blog.

  2. […] As a missionary I’ve often heard a person say “Oh, I could believe in the Church and its teachings if only it wasn’t for the story of the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith being a prophet.” Jesus Christ himself articulated the reason for the “marvelous work and wonder”, or the coming forth of the Book of Mormon, in the latter-days . In Matthew 7: 15-20, the Savior explains we can know a true prophet from a false one by their fruits. As you read these evidences ponder “what greater fruit could be given than a divine witness of the Book of Mormon?” […]
